New Device Can Block Cell Phone Use In Cars

Most of us are aware of the dangers of talking on the cell phone while driving. Yet some of us just can’t bring ourselves to ignore the phone when it rings and pick it up regardless of the sobering statistics, endangering ourselves and our fellow drivers. For those socialites and multi-taskers who can’t drive without the phone, two inventors may have found the solution.

According to an article by Michael W. Jones, two San Francisco inventors are marketing a new gadget that can block cell phone use on the road. The device, called Key2SafeDriving, is an automobile key holder that will prevent the use of cell phones for talking and texting while driving.

The gadget is placed on a car’s key and is synced to the driver’s specific phone. When the driver inserts the key into the ignition, the device automatically blocks the cell phone from operating. When the driver receives an incoming call, Key2SafeDriving will stop his/her cell phone’s operation and notify the caller through a text message that the person he/she is calling is currently driving. Other passengers in the car will still be able to use their cell phones.

Similar devices are popping up elsewhere. Aegis Mobile, a Canadian software company, will soon release DriveAssist, a product that will hold a person’s call when he/she is behind the wheel. This device detects when the cell phone is moving at automobile speeds and will subsequently redirect all calls to a voicemail system indicating the owner of the cell is currently driving.
