When Should I Contact A Lawyer After Being In A Car Accident?
I am often asked when it is the best time to contact a lawyer after being involved in an accident. The general rule is that sooner is better than later.
You definitely do not need an attorney for every injury case. For example, our office will not accept your automobile case if there is little or no property damage and/or your injuries are minor. In small cases like that, the attorney’s fees and costs might leave little or nothing for you after your medical bills are paid, which would not be fair to you. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't contact a lawyer and receive information to help you with your claim.
If it is determined that you do need an attorney, our office will prepare your personal injury case by evaluating your claim and educating you on the legal process for personal injury cases, meanwhile determining any deadlines that may apply.
It is important to remember, however, that even though your attorney is in charge of preparing your case, he will need your help to do so. It is important to keep an updated list of all the doctors and other medical providers you have seen since the accident. You will also need to be available to assist your attorney by answering discovery requests for the other side, preparing for depositions, and preparing for trial, if necessary. The best attorney in the world cannot help you if you do not assist him in preparing your case.
