The Road Respect Tour Raises Awareness About Cycling Safety

Utah’s first Road Respect Tour began Monday of this week. This event is a weeklong bike ride across Utah with a core group of 25 professional riders, who will promote safety between bicyclist and motorists while stopping in cities across Utah.

The Road Respect Tour began in Logan and has traveled through Ogden, Farmington, Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo, Nephi, Moroni, and Manti. Beginning June 16 the tour will travel through Moab and the Dead Horse Point loop, continue through Torrey and Loa on June 17, and they will finish the Road Respect Tour in Hurricane on June 18.

The focus of the Road Respect Tour initiative is not to place blame on a particular party for bicycle-vehicle accidents. Instead it is to teach respect and awareness for both drivers and cyclists to prevent further fatalities.

For more information about the Road Respect Tour and the cities they visit go to http://roadrespect.utah.gov.

Safety Suggestions

There are 850 accidents between cyclists and motorists, and an average of 6 bicyclists are killed each year on Utah roads. This is why the Road Respect Tour is sponsored by the Utah Department of Transportation, Zero Fatalities and the Department of Public Safety.

They want to remind motorists that bicycles have a right to share the road with them, so they recommend giving at least 3 feet of space when trying to pass a bicyclist and not giving into distractions.

For cyclists, they recommend riding single file when sharing the roads with cars. They also recommend riding in a straight line with the flow of traffic, and trying to make eye contact with motorists before turning.

Simple suggestions can go a long way in preventing future harm.

Bicycle Sales Are Up in the United States during National Bike Month

Although we have heard of other businesses struggling in this economy, one area related to National Bike Month is actually improving. More than 100 million bicycles are manufactured around the world every year, which makes it one of the bestselling machines of all time. On top of this, bicycle sales are up across the nation. Experts are suggesting that bikes are becoming more popular because the price of gas is escalating again, but bicycles also offer a type of recreation.

National Bike Month Gives Reasons to Ride

National Bike Month reminds us that bikes are a good way to exercise and to save money at the same time. A study from the Bureau of Transportation showed that the majority of people ride their bikes for two main reasons: 41% ride to be healthier because it is a form of exercise and it reduces pollution. Another 37% ride for recreation. Not only are there many trails to be enjoyed but there are organized rides and races in just about every location.

Although bicycles have many benefits both for health and finances, riding can also present danger since it places small 2-wheeled machines against larger 4-wheeled vehicles such as cars, buses, and trucks. Another goal of National Bike Month is to make the roads safer for bicyclers. Motorists need to share the road, but bicyclers need to be aware as well. Injuries that are associated with bike accidents such as head trauma, spinal cord injury, and broken bones could be prevented by using signals, wearing bright clothing, and wearing specialized bicycle helmets.
